THE MARITIMES
Canada's Atlantic coast

WHERE BIG COUNTRY MEETS BIG SEA
Our little boat bounced over the highest tide in the world as it receded around a patchwork of fir forest islands. Packs of portly seals sunned themselves on rocks.
Then a minke whale, and another. Porpoises slipped in and out of the calm blue of the bay. A puffin dragged itself across the horizon. And a bald eagle flew high among the stream of cotton clouds.
Welcome to Canada’s Maritimes, where big country meets big sea.

HALIFAX
Canada's gateway city

KNOW YOUR 'FAX
To get from London to Halifax, I had to fly into Enfield, drive to Dartmouth, bypass Bedford, then take the bridge over the Atlantic.
Confused? Don’t be. I don’t mean the Halifax in England, but the one in Nova Scotia – New Scotland – first colonised by France, and now a province of Canada.
Still confused? You won’t be. Despite the very English names, this once remote British outpost is now very Canadian. The red and white Maple Leaf flag flies proudly. Locals are happy and positive. Roads and vehicles are BIG. And sport is only played on ice with a stick.
